Adopting much of the K. L. Saigal style melodrama (street singer, 1938), Deedar tells the tale of adolescent Shamu (Dilip Kumar) and his childhood sweetheart Mala (Nargis). Mala's rich father disapproves their friendship. When the children have an accident while horse riding Mala’s father gets Shamu and his mother evicted. The trauma kills the mother and turns Shamu blind. He is rescued and brought up by Champa (Nimmi) and her canny guardian, Chaudhary. Champa loves Shamu but Shamu cannot forget Mala. Dr. Kishore restores Shamu’s eyesight. After gaining his eyesight Shamu goes to see Mala, and finds out that she is married to Dr. Kishore. Loss of Mala drives Shamu wild and he puts his eyes again and goes blind. Dilip Kumar’s tragic performance clearly evokes the Oedipus legend with blindness signifying an escape from the unbreakable present and mourning for a lost innocence.
