After his royal caravan is massacred in the desert, an infant prince is rescued by a humble dhobi, who names him Rattan and raises him to become a gifted musician. Years later, Princess Ragini suffers from a severe bout of insomnia that baffles all royal healers. It is only Rattan's magical melodies that finally soothe her into a peaceful slumber. As he cures her physical malady, the two fall deeply in love. However, their secret romance is soon discovered by the royal court. Disapproving of the seemingly lowly musician, the king imprisons Ragini and forces her into an arranged marriage with a stranger, leaving Rattan utterly heartbroken. Seeing his adopted son's profound despair, the loving dhobi takes Rattan back to the princess's kingdom, dangerously bringing the tragic lovers close to the flame once more.
