Mohanakrishnan, a carpenter, is arrested after disturbing a lyricist’s music session. His guru secures his release and sends him to Ravamavarma Thampuran to learn Carnatic music and work. There, Mohanakrishnan becomes a sub-priest at a temple and instantly falls in love with Sathyabhama, a schoolgirl making a living selling pappadam.
Sathyabhama begins hiding in the temple at night to escape her abusive cousin, Surendran. Mohanakrishnan allows her to stay, and they confess their love. However, the villagers discover them together. Outraged, the chief priest beats Mohanakrishnan, breaking his sacred thread. To protect them from the mob, Ravamavarma has the police arrest them.
Later, Surendran kidnaps Mohanakrishnan's sister, forcing him to exchange Sathyabhama for his sister. As Surendran drags Sathyabhama away, Mohanakrishnan fights back and defeats him. They hide in the temple, where Surendran gets stuck trying to kill them, and Mohanakrishnan kills him. Arrested again, Mohanakrishnan promises Sathyabhama he will return to her.
