Vichu, an orthodox Hindu boy, and Mary, a modern Christian girl, live in the same coastal village. Despite Mary's ruthless, wealthy brother David, the two fall in love when Mary begins music lessons with Vichu's mother. They meet secretly until David discovers their romance. Enraged, David physically abuses Mary and arranges her forced marriage to a relative to protect their religion and status.

Meanwhile, Mary’s sister-in-law, Elissy, turns against David after witnessing him commit a horrific rape. Emboldened, Elissy helps Mary reunite with Vichu. Despite initial hesitation, Vichu’s mother accepts them, but when David's men attack, she urges the couple to flee. The next morning, David leads an armed mob of angry villagers to confront the lovers on the beach. Ignoring the local priest's pleas for tolerance, David insists his sister will never marry a non-Christian. In a shocking act of defiance, both Vichu and Mary publicly renounce their religions and walk away together in peace.
