Azhagesan is a jobless chain smoker whose life revolves around his blossoming romance with Deivana, a local bigwig's daughter. Despite minor hurdles, their love remains strong. During a village festival, a violent clash breaks out with local liquor traders. Tragically, a devastating fire erupts during the chaos, killing many villagers, including Deivana. The heartbreaking truth is eventually revealed: the deadly blaze was accidentally started by Azhagesan carelessly tossing a cigarette butt into a haystack. Devastated by guilt and the loss of his love, he begs the furious villagers to kill him. Instead, they spare his life, and a grief-stricken Azhagesan leaves his home forever.
