Based on the true story of Afanasy Nikitin, a 15th-century Russian merchant, this film follows Afanasy (Oleg Strizhenov) as he leaves his family and fiancée to travel to India, a mysterious land no Russian has ever reached. Abandoned by a treacherous companion along the treacherous journey, Afanasy eventually arrives in India. Stranded and far from home, he rescues a dying girl, Champa (Nargis), by offering his medicine. He forms a close friendship with the outcast Sakharam (Balraj Sahni) and tries to meet the Sultan (Prithviraj Kapoor) for trade. Stranded by monsoons, he shelters in Champa's village, where they fall in love. However, cultural differences and her prior engagement prevent their union. After finishing his trade mission, Afanasy faces trouble on his return journey, saved once again by his loyal friend Sakharam.
