Mala, secretary to Lady Hiramani, is seen fleeing the scene just after the maid discovers her mistress’s dead body. Pursued by the police, her car crashes off a bridge, and with no body found she is presumed dead. She assumes a new identity as Nayantara, a successful dancer at the Venus Theater, surrounded by colleagues and associates of the cabaret world. One night she returns home to find a stranger claiming to be her husband, Manohar; the next day, he is found dead and she is arrested with a pistol in her hand. Now suspected of two murders—Lady Hiramani’s and Manohar’s—Nayantara/Mala’s past resurfaces as her brother and mother appear, and the investigation slowly reveals whether she is truly guilty.
