Murugan (Bharath), a diligent scooter mechanic from Madurai, leads a quiet life until a wealthy student, Aishwarya (Sandhya), falls deeply in love with him. Though initially reluctant due to their class divide, Murugan eventually reciprocates her feelings. Aware that her family will never approve, they elope to Chennai and marry with the help of his friend Stephen (Sukumar).

However, Aishwarya's family tracks them down. Feigning acceptance of the marriage, they convince the couple to return home. On the way, they ambush them at a family farmland, brutally beating Murugan. To save his life, a terrified Aishwarya is forced to remove her wedding thread and agree to an arranged marriage, while a severely injured Murugan is abandoned.

Years later, Aishwarya, now married with a child, spots a mentally unstable beggar at a traffic signal and realizes with horror that it is Murugan. She faints from the shock and is hospitalized, but sneaks out at night to find him, weeping over the tragic fate she feels responsible for. Her understanding husband discovers them, learns the heartbreaking truth, and kindly admits Murugan to a psychiatric care center. The film ends by revealing that this is a true story, shared with the director by the woman's husband during a train ride.
