Umrao Jaan DVD (1981)

In 1840, eight-year-old Amiran is abducted from her family by their neighbor, Dilawar Khan (Satish Shah), and sold to Madam Khanum Jaan (Shaukat Kaifi), the owner of a pleasure house where she trains courtesans. Amiran, renamed Umrao Jaan, learns to read, write, dance, sing, and charm men.

Now an adult, Umrao Jaan (Rekha) has become famous in the region for her charm and refinement. She captivates Nawab Sultan (Farooq Shaikh), a powerful nabob who must soon give up his love to marry a woman more suited to his social status. However, Umrao Jaan's charms also enchant another man, Faiz Ali, a notorious bandit with whom she decides to elope in order to escape her fate. He is quickly arrested, and Umrao Jaan is forced to return to her life as a courtesan—admired for her beauty, her dancing, and her poetic skills, yet always remaining on the margins of society.
