Ambitious Shyam (Rajesh Khanna) marries wealthy Rukmini (Tina Munim), but her scheming stepmother and uncle secretly plot to destroy their happiness. By tricking Rukmini into a procedure that leaves her permanently infertile, the villains successfully drive a wedge between the couple. Shyam finds innocent companionship with Radha (Padmini Kolhapure), but the villains manipulate Rukmini into believing they are having an affair, causing the couple to separate. After Radha survives a tragic, deceitful marriage that leaves her a widowed mother, Shyam takes her in. Seeking Shyam's ruin, the uncle takes him to court using a forged photograph to claim he bigamously married Radha. To clear Shyam's name and save his marriage, Radha confronts Rukmini, declaring her pure reverence for Shyam before tragically consuming poison. The film concludes with Shyam performing Radha's last rites as a remorseful Rukmini adopts her child.
