Karan Khanna (Abhishek Bachchan) is a captain in the air force. He is madly in love with the beautiful supermodel Nisha, with whom he plans to get married during his next leave. On his way to his beloved, he crosses paths with Sahiba Grewal (Aishwarya Rai), a somewhat scatterbrained girl who has witnessed a murder, and whom he saves from the killer's henchmen. Sahiba confides to Karan that she comes from a powerful, highly traditional Rajasthani industrialist family, and that her father plans to marry her off to his best friend's son. To avoid this union, the young woman has told her parents that she is already married, and asks Karan to accompany her and pretend to be her husband. Karan agrees and is immediately welcomed into the Grewal family. However, still in love with Nisha, he abandons Sahiba, who is then forced to confess the truth and marry the man chosen by her father — who turns out to be none other than the very murderer who had tried to have her killed.
