Rishi, a young engineer from the city, agrees to an arranged marriage with a village girl, Senbagam. During their meeting, one of their rare moments of relative privacy, Senbagam begs Rishi to refuse the marriage because she is in love with someone else. She does not dare confess this to her family, who are extremely proud of and honoured by this potential match. When Rishi has to announce his decision in front of the whole family, he meets the gaze of Roja, Senbagam’s younger sister, and declares that she is the one he wants to marry. Roja’s world collapses. She has always said that she would never get married and that she would continue her studies, and she also feels guilty, believing she has stolen her sister’s fiancé. Under these circumstances, the young couple’s early days are difficult, but things improve and they both leave for Kashmir, where Rishi has to carry out a mission for the army. Their happiness seems limitless in this magnificent region, when suddenly reality catches up with them: Rishi is kidnapped by a group of separatists who want to exchange him for their imprisoned leader.
After the gentle warmth of family life in the South and the delightful discovery of love, the young Roja begins the painful learning of fear and her confrontation with the authorities.
