Tara Sen, a young woman from a small Indian town, is close friends with Ghana, a servant. When her brother’s friend Bijesh molests her, gossip destroys her reputation and her parents fail to arrange her marriage. During Devi Pooja, taunts lead to a brawl in which a man is killed, and Ghana is jailed. The corrupt inspector Badal Gupta agrees to free Ghana only if Tara marries him; she accepts, but he neither reforms nor keeps his promise. After a violent quarrel, Tara strikes him with an axe; he later dies, and she is imprisoned. Learning that Ghana is in the Andamans, she gets herself transferred there, only to discover she can see him only by marrying him. Ghana refuses, feeling inferior to her social status. Tara is left facing a bleak choice: return home to a lonely life or end her suffering through suicide.
