When Panchali arrives in the strict village of Thamaraikulam, she falls deeply in love with Paranjothi, an unemployed but kind-hearted graduate. Their budding romance sparks outrage among the conservative villagers, leading to brutal public humiliation that forces Paranjothi to leave for the city. Before departing, he vows to secure a job and return for Panchali, promising to signal her via the Eastbound Train. In his absence, Panchali's lecherous brother-in-law plots to marry her. When heavy floods threaten the village, the superstitious elders force Panchali into a degrading ritual, demanding she walk naked to appease the gods. Just as the ritual begins, a newly successful Paranjothi arrives. He fiercely rescues Panchali from the mob, and with the tragic sacrifice of a sympathetic ally, the lovers narrowly escape aboard the running Eastbound Train to start a new life.
