Postmaster Deendayal’s once-close family begins to fall apart as ego, money, and unhappy relationships create deep divisions. His daughter Rajni shocks everyone by choosing to marry her Christian colleague Peter, while son Shiva’s marriage to Basanti suffers because she devotes herself to helping Vidyasagar with his studies. Trouble grows when elder son Vijay, worried about his expanding family, refuses to keep contributing equally to the household and demands repayment for Rajni’s wedding expenses. Hurt by Vijay’s words, Deendayal draws a line through the house, separating the family and forbidding contact. Determined to return the money, he takes voluntary retirement and works multiple jobs despite his age and pain. As the household grows colder and more divided, Vijay’s wife Uma returns and, with Godavari and the maid Gangubai, tries to reunite the fractured family.
The film is a remake of the Tamil film Samsaram Adhu Minsaram.
