Dia, an Indian-origin dancer and choreographer, practices her art in New York. Ten years ago, she fell out with Shamli, her hometown, because of a love affair and left vowing never to set foot there again. ​

In the middle of rehearsals, a phone call informs her that Makarand, her teacher, the man who taught her everything, is dying and desperately wants to see her one last time. When Dia arrives in Shamli, it is too late; her guru has already passed away. What pains her even more is seeing the dilapidated state of the theatre where she took her first steps on stage. ​

Once the heart of the community, the Ajanta is now in ruins and under threat of demolition by the authorities, with local power brokers eager to line their pockets by selling the land. Makarand’s last wish was precisely that Dia should bring the theatre back to life.
