In a village deeply divided by caste, Balu, a generous anti-caste atheist, faces tragedy when his son falls for Vaidehi, a Brahmin priest's daughter. To escape an arranged marriage, Vaidehi fakes her death, inadvertently triggering a confrontation that ends in the accidental deaths of both her father and Balu's son. Orphaned and shunned by the Brahmin community, Vaidehi’s young brother Sankara is lovingly adopted by a grieving Balu, who even renounces his own caste title. When Vaidehi eventually returns alive, a jealous rival incites a violent mob against Balu for sheltering Brahmins in a lower-caste home. Balu bravely defends the siblings but is fatally stabbed, using his dying breath to plead for societal unity. In profound protest of the caste system, young Sankara discards his sacred Brahmin thread to perform Balu's last rites as his true son.
