Set in the bustling slums of Mumbai, this is the story of a struggling family living a hand-to-mouth existence. A cycle rickshaw driver and his wife Sulabha raise seven children, where putting food on the table is the greatest daily challenge. Driven by desperation to feed her family, their daughter Janaki sacrifices herself to a truck driver named Purushottam Singh (Raj Babbar). When she discovers he is already married with a son, she walks out of his life for good. The truth, however, proves devastating for Janaki's mother — upon learning that her daughter slept with a man for nothing more than a plate of chicken biryani, she is overcome with shame and takes her own life. Left alone and pregnant, Janaki refuses to reveal the father's identity and resolves to raise the child on her own.
A raw and unflinching story, the film exposes how women from lower-income communities can easily fall prey to manipulation by men of higher social standing, and how the daily struggle for a single decent meal can push an entire family to the edge.
