Monish Rai, from a wealthy family, loves Devayani, who is from a modest background, but fears his parents will reject the match and stop funding his studies in England, so they decide to marry after his return. After he leaves, Devayani’s father is crushed by debts and is manipulated by Rakhal, a false friend and debauched rich man who desires Devayani. Believing he is securing her a comfortable life, the father forces her to marry Rakhal despite her pleas. Rakhal soon proves violent, ruined by drink, gambling and women, while Devayani unhappily gives birth to a daughter, Suparna, then eventually runs away and becomes a devadasi in a kotha, leaving her child in a Christian orphanage to protect her from her father. When Monish returns, still single and unable to forget her, he believes he recognises Devayani under the name Pannabai, a famous tawaif from Lucknow.
