The film opens with the narrator explaining the nine human emotions, known as Navarasam: Wonder (அற்புதம்), Fear (பயம்), Compassion (கருணை), Anger (கோபம்), Equanimity (சாந்தம்), Disgust (அருவருப்பு), Elegance (சிங்காரம்), Bravery (வீரம்), and Joy (ஆனந்தம்). Legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan plays nine distinct roles, with each character brilliantly embodying one of these emotions. The story follows Nalina (Savitri) as she experiences these nine emotions over nine consecutive nights.
Nalina is the only daughter of a wealthy man. While she is joyfully celebrating the Navaratri festival at home with her friends, her father informs her that a prospective groom and his parents are coming to arrange her marriage. Nalina strongly opposes the proposal, as she wants to marry her college sweetheart, Anand. Following a heated argument with her father, she secretly runs away from home on the very first night of Navaratri.
