D.K. Malhotra (Naseeruddin Shah) is living happily with his wife Indu (Shabana Azmi) and two daughters - Pinky (Urmila Matondkar) and Mini (Aradhana) in Delhi. One day he receives a phone call that sweeps him off his feet. He comes to know about his 9-year old son Rahul, the result of his affair with Bhavna (Supriya Pathak) years back. He now will have to shoulder his responsibility as Bhavna is dead. Indu is shockingly heart-broken to learn about his husband’s adultery. Rahul is never told that DK is his father while he bonds with DK and his daughters. But Indu can't bear to look at him, a tangible reminder of DK's betrayal. Indu’s apathy and rejection upsets Rahul. Having no choice, DK decides to admit him in a boarding school in Nainital. Just before his moving to Nainital permanently, Rahul comes to know that DK is his father and goes missing from the house. What happens next forms the climax of this heart rending emotional film MASOOM which was Shekhar Kapur’s debut film as director.
