A homeless urchin receives his name, Sikandar (Amitabh Bachchan), from his foster mother. He gets employment as an attendant of Kaamna (Raakhee), with whom he falls in love, but one day he is cast out by her father Ramanath who accuses him of theft. Many years later, Sikandar befriends the lawyer, Vikas (Vinod Khanna) and they become best friends. Meanwhile, Vikas and Kaamna (who is now a grown woman) are in love and want to get married. Sikandar is aware of this and swallows his pain. He frequents a brothel where Zohra (Rekha), a prostitute falls in love with him. She has a lover (Amjad Khan) who is in jail. When he hears of Zohra's love for Sikandar, he seeks to murder his rival on the same day that Vikas and Kaamna are to be married. In the duel that follows, both succumb to their wounds.
